The Seriousness of Truck Driver Fatigue
Sleep deprivation impairs a person’s ability to perform tasks. including those related to driving. When commercial truck drivers become fatigued, they are at a high risk of causing a crash.
In December 2014, the federal government suspended certain laws that had been put in place just a year earlier regarding rest requirements the maximum weekly hours of operation for truck drivers. The previous law required that the 34-hour interim between work weeks include at least two periods between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. This break was intended to provide truckers with the opportunity to get more sleep before getting back at the wheel. Now, the break between work weeks only include one 1 a.m. -5 a.m. period. This allows truck drivers to begin a work week that could be as long as 80 hours having gotten less sleep.
According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, driver fatigue is the number one factor in large truck crashes. Sleepy drivers respond much slower than those who are more rested and, as shown in a recent study, fatigued driving can be just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated.
